Accessible Websites

In Canada between 2001 and 2006 the number of persons who reported having a disability increased by three-quarters of a million people, reaching 4.4 million in 2006 – Statistics Canada. As a result of our aging population, the percentage of disabled individuals in our population is growing more rapidly the population itself. It is also estimated that approximately 25% (1/4) of individuals in the country either have a disability, or are closely connected to somebody who does.

All of these statistics equate one reality: people with disabilities and their friends and families represent over $200 billion in discretionary spending! That number is growing every year.

Web Barn believes this is a market that cannot be ignored as does the Government of Ontario. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) will mandate accessibility for all websites based on web accessibility standards. This legislation closely resembles similar laws in the United States and across the globe. This means within the next few years, websites will become accessible for all users. Website accessibility primarily focuses on users with low vision and vision loss (a large percentage of our aging population and disability percentage.)

What does this mean for you? Website accessibility is fairly easy to attain when you work with experienced individuals. Web Barn has been involved in accessibility for years and has positioned itself to help our clients achieve a high standard of website accessibility.

Website Accessibility Audits

If you currently have a website, but need to achieve accessibility compliance, Web Barn can perform an audit on your website to determine what needs to be done. This is a full auditing program that addresses all elements of website accessibility and provides you with recommendations on your next best course of action.
